Slaithwaite is a small town, or a big village, depending on your viewpoint, in the Colne Valley, near Huddersfield in the county of West Yorkshire, England.

It has at least three possible pronunciations, depending on status.

  • A local of long standing says Slawit,
  • A 'comer in' (who has lived there for 50 years or less) says Slathwayte,
  • A BBC announcer - says Slaythwayte.

Once you have decided on how you will pronounce it, there are a few other things that you need to know about the Village (which is what I call it) - apart from Slawit that is, from which you may have gleaned that I have been here for some time.

It has, amongst other things,

  • a railway station, a bank, a building society, lots of eating places, a canal, a post office, some mills and factories, a small park, two car parks, two health centres, Churches and Chapels, a swimming bath, a community centre, charity shops, a tapestry, two viaducts and a library.
  • It also has a Moonraking Festival - more about that later.

It does not have ( again amongst other things)

  • a petrol station, a bus station, public toilets, good transport links, a supermarket, a B&Q, a cinema, a theatre or an art gallery.

So as you know a bit about Slawit, please explore our site, and learn a lot more. Just click on the menu buttons on the left and see what happens.

This part of the site is hopefully for adverts from local supporters. Please contact our webmaster for details and prices.
