Slaithwaite is a small town, (or a big village) in the Colne Valley, near Huddersfield in the county of West Yorkshire, England.

It has at least three possible pronunciations, depending on status.

• A local of long standing says Slawit,
• A 'comer in' (who has lived there for 50 years or less) says Slathwayte,
• A BBC announcer - says Slaythwayte.

Once you have decided on how you will pronounce it, there are a few other things that you need to know about the Village (which is what I call it) - apart from Slawit that is, from which you may have gleaned that I have been here for some time.

It has, amongst other things,

• A railway station, a bank, a building society, lots of eating places, a canal, a post office, some mills and factories, a small park, two car parks, two health centres, Churches Chapels and schools, a swimming bath, a community centre, charity shops, a tapestry, two viaducts and a library.
• A participatory Arts Centre
• An excellent Taxi Bus service
• It also has a Moonraking Festival - more about that later.

It does not have ( again amongst other things)

• a petrol station, a bus station, a supermarket, a B&Q, a cinema, a theatre or an art gallery.
